Following on from my previous post about the environmental improvements at Bird Sanctuary, some similar work has taken place at the north end of Ladies Pond.
Several new pools have been excavated which will provide an excellent habitat for amphibians and good feeding for birds and other wildlife. A water-rail, which is unusual on the Heath has already been spotted using the new pools by Bird Sanctuary Pond.
Around 30m of the Fleet stream has also been created leading from the Stock pond. This water was previously piped below the surface but now runs above ground creating additional wetland habitat and will be of historical importance as it is now one of the longest sections of the old Fleet river to run above ground.
The areas around the pools and the stream will be planted up in the next few weeks with the help of the Heath Hands volunteers.
